QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Israeli officials are increasingly concerned over efforts by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to rebuild and enhance the country’s military capabilities, according to a report published Wednesday by the Hebrew newspaper Maariv.
The report said that the Syrian leadership is currently working to rehabilitate the air force and develop heavy firepower systems, including armored units, artillery, and missile capabilities. It added that Israeli authorities acknowledge the pace of military development in Syria has exceeded prior expectations.
According to Maariv, Israeli defense and military institutions consider the current Syrian administration a potential long-term threat. A military source quoted by the newspaper said, “We do not trust this regime and must view it as a very serious threat.”
Another senior Israeli official, whose name was not disclosed, told the outlet that “the situation remains unclear, and it is not known where Syria is heading.” The official added that Syria is working to rebuild its air defense systems and restore limited helicopter operations, noting that some aircraft reportedly attempted to fly earlier this week.
The report also indicated that Israeli intelligence is closely monitoring developments inside Syria, particularly efforts to reestablish military infrastructure. It added that Israeli officials are assessing regional implications, including potential spillover effects into neighboring countries.
No official comment has been issued by Syrian authorities regarding the report.
