Hikmat al-Hijri dissolves “Supreme Legal Committee” in Syria’s Suwayda

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Spiritual leader of the Druze community in Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria, Hikmat al-Hijri, announced on Tuesday the dissolution of the “Supreme Legal Committee” in Suwayda.

The committee had been formed in August 2025 by al-Hijri following military escalation in the governorate to oversee public services and to appoint new internal security leadership aimed at ensuring essential services for residents.

The committee included six judges — four of them senior advisors — in addition to three lawyers.

In a statement, al-Hijri said the committee “was formed in Bashan at a critical and decisive moment, in response to an extreme state of emergency during highly sensitive circumstances.”

He added that Judge Shadi Fayez Murshed had been tasked with forming an administrative council in Jabal Bashan to serve as an administrative body based on professional management standards, away from quota-based appointments and focused on placing the right person in the right position.

Al-Hijri stressed that the administration’s primary role is crisis management aimed at helping the local community overcome the repercussions of the siege and attacks, securing decent living conditions, and protecting internal security against attempts to undermine the social fabric.
