U.S. Embassy issues security alert for citizens in Damascus

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Embassy in Syria issued on Friday a security alert warning U.S. citizens in Damascus to prepare to “shelter in place” following media reports that Iran has threatened to target civilian locations in Syria, including hotels hosting foreign guests.

The alert said Iran had previously attacked civilian facilities across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, embassies, and other sites, and that similar threats were now being reported in Syria.

According to the embassy, some organizations have already relocated staff away from hotels in the Syrian capital as a precaution.

The embassy advised U.S. citizens to remain inside secure buildings, stock essential supplies such as food, water, and medication, and avoid unnecessary movement.

It also urged them to avoid protests and demonstrations, maintain a low profile, and closely follow guidance from local authorities and reliable news sources.

The embassy reminded citizens that its operations in Damascus have been suspended since 2012, meaning the U.S. government cannot provide routine or emergency consular services inside Syria.

The alert noted that the Embassy of Czech Republic in Damascus serves as the protecting power for U.S. interests in Syria. U.S. citizens unable to contact the Czech mission were advised to seek emergency assistance from the U.S. Embassy in Amman.

Citizens were also urged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), keep travel documents accessible, maintain communication with family members, and make contingency plans to leave Syria without relying on U.S. government assistance.
