Syriac Union Party calls for presidential decree recognizing rights

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syriac Union Party on Saturday called on Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa to issue a decree recognizing the political, national, and cultural rights of the Syriac-Assyrian community, describing the move as a necessary first step toward constitutional protection of those rights.

In a statement released following its annual meeting, the party urged the Syrian president to issue a presidential decree acknowledging the rights of the Syriac-Assyrian people.

“We stress the necessity and importance of issuing a decree from the President of the Syrian Republic, Ahmad al-Sharaa, recognizing the political, national, and cultural rights of the Syriac-Assyrian people as an important initial step that paves the way for enshrining these rights in the Syrian constitution,” the statement said.

According to the party, participants in the meeting discussed an assessment of the political, social, and economic situation in Syria, as well as the conditions of the Syriac-Assyrian community and Christians in general in light of regional and international developments and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The statement added that attendees emphasized the importance of the January 29 agreement and expressed support for it, provided that its implementation meets the aspirations of all components in the region within a framework of expanded decentralization.

Participants also stressed the need for the Syrian government to ensure genuine participation of all segments and components of Syrian society and to represent them in state institutions based on competence.

The party further called for amending the constitutional declaration that governs the current transitional phase and for the formation of a committee tasked with drafting a permanent constitution for Syria.

It also demanded representation for the Syriac-Assyrian community in that committee.
