France says Syria-SDF agreement best opportunity for both sides

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – French Foreign Ministry spokesperson Christophe Lemoine said on Tuesday that the recent agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) “represents the best opportunity available to both parties.”

Speaking to Syria TV, Lemoine added that Paris is working to bring the two sides closer to ensure the success of the agreement, and that France maintains an equally close position with both parties. He noted that France has ten years of joint operations with the SDF against the Islamic State (ISIS).

He acknowledged that implementing the agreement is not easy and emphasized that France will continue conveying messages between the two sides, stressing that the deal was necessary to continue combating ISIS and securing prisons.

Lemoine also said that SDF Commander General Mazloum Abdi views the agreement with the Syrian government as “an opportunity to act as a statesman, not just a general.”

In a separate context, he noted that French President Emmanuel Macron strongly wishes to visit Syria soon, accompanied by companies interested in investment. He also expressed France’s hope that Israel respects international law regarding the Golan Heights, underscoring the importance of Syria remaining unified and sovereign without foreign interference.

He added, “Syrians and Israelis are open to a new round of negotiations, and Paris is ready to host it,” without specifying a date for the new talks.
