Syria’s Interior Ministry launches probe into young man’s death
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba said on Monday that an investigation committee has begun work in Latakia governorate to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of citizen Muhammad Ghamira.
On Sunday, Muhammad Hassam al-Din Ghamira died in the intensive care unit at Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia, days after being admitted in critical condition following his detention at a police station in al-Haffah in rural Latakia.
Al-Baba said “the strictest legal measures will be taken against anyone proven to be involved in any violation or negligence, regardless of their position.”
He added that authorities would not allow anyone to escape accountability, stressing the family’s right to know the truth and the importance of upholding the rule of law.
The Interior Minister formed the investigation committee to examine the circumstances surrounding Ghamira’s death following his detention at a police station in the al-Haffah area of rural Latakia.
The Interior Ministry said the committee is headed by Maj. Gen. Ahmad Muhammad Latouf, deputy interior minister for police affairs.
The committee also includes Brig. Gen. Samer Mahmoud al-Hussein, adviser to the interior minister for legal affairs and human rights; Brig. Gen. Muath Khaled al-Jammal, director of the Department of Disciplinary Cases and Prosecutions; and Brig. Gen. Hussein Alawi al-Hammadi, director of the Criminal Investigations Department.
