Mass grave discovered near al-Safira in Aleppo countryside
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Security and rescue sources said on Wednesday that a mass grave containing multiple bodies was discovered in the western countryside of the town of al-Safira, east of Aleppo city, prompting authorities to secure the area and open an investigation.
State-run media reported that local internal security forces established a cordon around the site while teams from public security and forensic units prepared to examine the remains. A spokesperson for the provincial security apparatus told North Press that initial responders were keeping the area sealed until forensic specialists arrived to begin systematic excavation and identification procedures.
The Syrian Civil Defence (White Helmets), which has been active in nearby governorates, said its specialised teams have been assisting locally where access and safety permit.
The discovery follows a separate operation announced last week by the Civil Defence in Homs city, where teams began work to identify remains uncovered in a mass grave found in the Karam al-Zaytoun area. Human rights organisations have previously documented mass graves across multiple governorates dating to periods of intense conflict.
