Elderly man killed in landmine blast in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – An elderly man was killed on Monday when a landmine, a remnant of past conflicts, exploded in a village in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
A local source from the town of Abu Kamal told North Press that the explosion occurred while Ayed al-Hazzaa was herding his sheep on the outskirts of the al-Heri desert.
The source confirmed that the explosion instantly killed al-Hazzaa and also claimed the lives of several sheep.
The village has seen repeated landmine explosions in recent years. Despite numerous promises by relevant authorities to clear the area of unexploded ordnance, no demining operations have yet been carried out, according to the source.
The al-Heri desert is considered one of Syria’s most heavily mined areas, largely due to its strategic border location and history of military confrontations.
