Lebanese speaker expects major shift in Syria ties
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday said that he expects a significant development in relations between Lebanon and Syria in the coming period, following what he described as a frank and productive meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
Speaking to a number of visitors, Berri referred to his recent meeting with al-Shaibani, saying the discussions reflected the possibility of opening a new chapter in relations between Beirut and Damascus.
According to remarks attributed to him, Berri said the new Syrian government is seeking to consolidate stability and end disputes with countries and parties in the region.
He added that Damascus was working to open a new page with different sides, including Lebanon’s Shiite community, drawing a comparison with developments in Syria’s relations with Iraq.
Berri’s comments come amid efforts to reshape relations between Syria and neighboring countries following major political changes in Damascus.
Relations between Beirut and Damascus have long been shaped by political tensions, security concerns and unresolved bilateral issues, including border management, the fate of Lebanese detainees and missing persons, and the return of Syrian refugees from Lebanon.
The meeting between Berri and al-Shaibani signals continued diplomatic engagement between Lebanese and Syrian officials as both countries seek to address longstanding issues and strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Berri did not provide further details about the expected developments or specify what measures could be taken to advance relations between the two neighboring countries.
His remarks nevertheless point to expectations of increased political and diplomatic engagement between Beirut and Damascus in the coming period.
