Israeli army announces killing 2 Hezbollah leaders in southern Lebanon
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Israeli army announced on Tuesday that it killed two senior Hezbollah commanders in a military operation in southern Lebanon, amid ongoing cross-border tensions.
In a statement, the Israeli army identified the two slain figures as Mohammad Abbas Shaashou, artillery commander in the Sohmour area in southern Lebanon, and Mohammad Hussein Yassin, a senior member of the terrorist organization’s artillery unit in the Shaqeef sector.
According to the statement, Shaashou was involved in several rocket attacks targeting Kiryat Shmona and the Golan Heights. He had also been working to rebuild Hezbollah’s military infrastructure in southern Lebanon and implement operations described by Israel as “a direct threat to its forces.”
The army added that Yassin played a central role in planning and executing attacks against the Galilee panhandle and Kiryat Shmona, as well as facilitating the transfer of weapons and logistical support to areas south of the Litani River — a zone from which Hezbollah is prohibited under UN Resolution 1701.
Lebanese officials condemned the Israeli operation, calling it part of a continuing series of violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty despite the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024.
They further noted that Israeli forces remain positioned at five strategic locations in southern Lebanon, including the northern section of the village of Ghajar, which Beirut considers an ongoing occupation and a breach of UN Security Council resolutions.
