UN Reports 168,000 Syrian Refugees Returned From Lebanon
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – More than 168,000 Syrian refugees have returned from Lebanon to Syria since the start of 2025, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Deputy, Kelly Clements, announced on Thursday. Clements noted that an increasing number of Syrians are expressing their intention to return to their home country.
“During her visit to Beirut, Clements held meetings with Major General Hassan Shakher, General Director of General Security, Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Metri, and Minister of Social Affairs Haneen Al-Sayyed. She expressed her gratitude to the Lebanese officials for their close collaboration with UNHCR and commended their key role in facilitating the safe return of Syrian refugees
Clements reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to continue working with the Lebanese government, as well as local and international partners, to ensure that the return of Syrian refugees is safe, voluntary, and dignified. She stressed that refugee return remains a shared priority in the coming period.
The return of refugees reflects ongoing regional efforts to stabilize communities in Syria while providing humanitarian assistance and support to displaced populations. Local authorities continue coordinating with international organizations to facilitate returns and ensure basic services are accessible to returning families.
The UNHCR confirmed that follow-up initiatives will continue over the coming months, aiming to sustain and expand humanitarian and logistical support for returning Syrian refugees.
