Thousands Attend Funeral of Kurdish YPG Co-Founder Nour al-Din al-Soufi in Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Thousands of residents from Qamishli and its countryside, northeast Syria,  attended On Tuesday the funeral ceremony of Kurdish leader and one of the founders of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Nour al-Din al-Soufi.

The event  was attended by the Commander -in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, alongside prominent figures from the SDF and the wider region.

Al-Soufi, aged 55, lost life in April 2021 following a Turkish attack on the Gara area in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Born in 1970 in the village of Mushayrifa near Qamishli, al-Soufi was one of the founders of the People’s Protection Units (YPG).

In a statement released by the YPG Media Center this past Sunday, they highlighted al-Soufi’s significant contributions to founding the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) and advancing the efforts of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

The funeral procession, organized in coordination with the Autonomous Administration institutions and the Martyrs’ Families Council, took place at the Martyrs of March 12 Stadium in Qamishli. The burial followed at the Martyr Delil Sarukhan Cemetery in the city.
