UN Envoy Pedersen Calls for Solutions in Northeast Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, underscored the urgency of finding solutions to the challenges facing northeast Syria during a press conference held in Damascus on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters, Pedersen emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue between key players in the region, including discussions between Ahmed Al-Shar’a, leader of the new Syrian administration, and General Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Encouraging Dialogue and Compromise

“The situation in northeast Syria was among the primary issues I discussed with Ahmed Al-Shar’a,” Pedersen said, expressing optimism about recent initiatives. He welcomed the meeting between Al-Shar’a and Abdi, calling it a positive step toward addressing the region’s pressing challenges.

Pedersen also highlighted the necessity for all stakeholders to engage constructively and make compromises to ensure progress.

Ongoing Negotiations

The UN envoy noted that negotiations between Turkey and the United States regarding northeast Syria are ongoing. “We are optimistic about these talks,” he said, without elaborating on specific details.

Additionally, Pedersen acknowledged discussions between the interim Syrian government and the SDF. “I am encouraged by the dialogue between these parties and hopeful about the potential outcomes,” he added.

A Critical Juncture

The situation in northeast Syria remains complex, marked by security concerns, humanitarian challenges, and political tensions. Pedersen reiterated the need for coordinated efforts from the international community to address these issues effectively.

“The coming weeks will be critical in determining the path forward for northeast Syria,” he concluded.
