SDF’s Abdi warns of escalating ISIS threat, urges international action
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, warned on Sunday of the growing threat posed by ISIS militants in detention centers and camps in northeastern Syria.
“The threat of ISIS in detention centres and camps is increasing and there is an increase in the movement of ISIS in general,” Abdi said in an interview with The Sun.
“There is a need to intensify efforts to continue to fight against ISIS if we don’t want to see a resurgence,” he added.
Abdi revealed that approximately 10,000 ISIS fighters are currently imprisoned in Syria, ready to unleash destruction in the Middle East if left unchecked.
The SDF commander highlighted the presence of foreign nationals among those detained, including British citizens, citing the notorious example of Shamima Begum, a former ISIS member widely known as the “jihadi bride.”
He indicated that U.S. intelligence classifies around 2,000 of these detainees as “highly dangerous.”
The commander noted that the Hawl and Roj camps in Northeast Syria collectively house over 60,000 ISIS fighters and their families.
He expressed concerns about the group’s ongoing efforts to orchestrate prison breaks, warning of the continued threat ISIS poses to Western nations.
Abdi urged the international community to take responsibility by ensuring justice for detained fighters through trials and convictions for the atrocities they committed in the Middle East, stressing the importance of international support for such efforts.
