Fires devour vast forest areas in Syria’s Afrin
AFRIN, Syria (North Press) – Forest fires have devoured for the fifth day large parts of forest areas near the town of Jindires in the countryside of Afrin Region, northwestern Syria.
“Fires broke out in forest areas in the vicinity of the village of Haj Hasanli near Jindires, and continued for more than five hours, devouring large areas estimated at about five hectares, which damaged hundreds of trees”, a local source told North Press.
“Fires break out daily and have been like this for five days,” the sources added. They suspected arson without mentioning any other details.
The source said that firefighting teams extinguished the fires after a work that lasted for hours, due to the difficulty of the terrain and the inability to reach some parts of areas on fire, so it expanded to larger areas.
On August 6, huge wildfires devoured large parts of forest areas near the towns of Jindires and Bulbul in the countryside Afrin.
