Latakia wildfires deliberate – Civil Defense commander

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Jalal Dawood, the commander of the Civil Defense in Latakia, affiliated with the Syrian government, stated that the wildfires storming Latakia’s woodlands are deliberate because they broke out in different areas.

“The fires are definitely deliberate because they broke out in areas that are not connected to each other, and investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible,” Dawood told state-owned Sham FM radio

“We have controlled about 70 percent of the fires, but they are still raging in other areas like Jabal Namlah, Rihanyah, and around Mashqita,” he said.

“The reason for not fully containing the fires is wind direction, which reignited the flames in some areas, in addition to the difficulty of the rugged roads and the distance of water sources from the fires,” he noted.

He pointed out that they have not estimated the size of damage yet.
