Unknown men kidnap 2 Iranian-backed militants in Syria’s Desert

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Unknown armed people kidnapped on Sunday two Iraqi militants of Iranian-backed militia in the town of Abu Kamal, east of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

A military source of the Iranian-backed Iraqi faction Abu al-Fadel al-Abbas in Abu Kamal told North Press that unknown armed men, driving a car, lured tow Iraqi militants and kidnapped them near the post they work in, in the town of Sukaria, west of Abu Kamal. 

The car was carrying more than five armed men who were wearing a military fatigues, according to the source, citing eyewitnesses.

The Iranian-backed militias and Syrian government forces control vast swathes of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which witness increasing activity by Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells and militants.

In April, three militants of the Iranian-backed Liwa Fatemiyoun militia were killed and two others were injured in an IED blast of ISIS in a town west of Deir ez-Zor.

Since 2017, the Syrian government forces have been combing the desert in response to ISIS increasing practices that have caused the forces massive human and material losses.
