Jordan threatens with military operation in Syria over drug smuggling
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Friday evening, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi threatens with a military operation inside Syria in case “effective measures” to curb drug smuggling were not taken by the latter.
In an interview with the American news channel CNN, Safadi said that many people have suffered consequences due to the Syrian crisis, including Jordan, and will make sure to do whatever it takes to mitigate any threat to Jordan’s security.
Safadi added, “We are not taking the threat of drug smuggling lightly.”
He stressed, “If we do not see effective measures to curb that threat, we will do what it takes to counter that threat, including taking military action inside Syria.”
He noted that drug smuggling threatens not only Jordan, “but through Jordan to the Gulf countries, other Arab countries and the world.”
During previous years, many countries around the world confiscated hundreds of drugs’ shipping coming from the Syrian government-held areas.
Continuous smuggling of narcotics into Jordanian territory have been launched, as the Jordanian army periodically announces the seizure of quantities of captagon pills and other drugs.
Several international reports, headed by the US Treasury, accuse the Syrian government and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia of running large drug trafficking networks in this border area, as well as other Syrian regions.
