Four drones target Iranian Kurdish opposition camps near Erbil
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Four explosive drones on Wednesday targeted sites used by Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in three areas of Erbil province in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with no casualties reported, security sources told Reuters.
The drones struck positions in the Soran, Khalifan and Harir districts, according to the sources.
One drone crashed in the Harir area, sparking a fire in grassland and pasture around Mount Bani Harir, while another fell near a village in the Khalifan district, the sources said.
A third drone struck a civilian home in Soran, according to the sources. Information on the location of the fourth drone was not immediately available.
The targeted sites are used by the Komala and Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), two Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region.
No casualties were reported from Wednesday’s attacks.
UK Maritime Trade Operations, a British navy-affiliated agency, has not been cited in connection with the incidents, which occurred amid an ongoing escalation between Iran and the United States and Israel.
The attacks came a day after security sources reported that a training camp belonging to Iranian Kurdish opposition groups northeast of Erbil had been targeted by missiles.
Iran has repeatedly targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, accusing them of conducting armed activities against the Islamic Republic. The groups have denied operating as a threat to Iran from Iraqi territory.
The latest strikes add to a series of attacks on Iranian Kurdish opposition positions in the Kurdistan Region since the U.S.-Iran war began on Feb. 28. Earlier Reuters reporting documented an explosive drone attack on an Iranian Kurdish opposition camp north of Erbil in June, with no casualties reported after the camp had been evacuated.
