EU reaffirms non-recognition of Israeli sovereignty over Golan
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) — The European Union reaffirmed on Wednesday that it does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, following Colombia’s recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the territory.
An EU spokesperson told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the bloc’s position is based on international law and UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 497.
The EU’s reaffirmation came after Colombia announced on Aug. 10 that it had recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, becoming the second country after the United States to formally recognize Israel’s claim to the territory.
Colombia said its decision was based on the Golan’s importance to Israel’s national defense, arguing that maintaining Israeli control and sovereignty over the territory was essential to Israel’s ability to protect its citizens.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Colombia’s decision. In a video posted on X, he said, “The Israeli flag flies here and will continue to fly here, because this is our land.”
The EU position contrasts with the recognition by Colombia and the United States. The bloc has maintained that the Golan’s status is governed by international law and relevant UN resolutions.
