10 rockets target US base in NE Syria – CENTCOM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Ten rockets targeted the US troops at the “Green Village” northeast Syria, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Friday.
This came in a press release in which the CENTCOM stressed that the attack resulted in no casualties or material damage among the US personnel or in facilities.
One of the rockets targeted a civilian house and caused a significant damage as well as two women and two children were injured.
“This kind of indiscriminate rocket attack places not only our forces and coalition forces at risk, but also jeopardizes the local civilian population as well as the security and stability of Syria and the entire region,” said Col. Joe Buccino, a spokesperson for US CENTCOM.
“As President Biden has made clear, we will take all necessary measures to defend our people and will always respond at a time and place of our choosing,” Buccino continued.
The CENTCOM is one of the eleven unified combatant commands of the US Department of Defense. It was founded in 1983, taking over the previous responsibilities of the Rapid Deployment Joint Task Force (RDJTF). In northeast Syria, the CENTCOM aims at continuing to develop and enable the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to defeat ISIS and requesting the nations repatriate their citizens of ISIS families from Hawl and Roj camps.
On March 23, the CENTCOM announced conducting a strike against facilities used by groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Syria in response to an Iranian drone attack on a US base.
Earlier on that day, an Iranian drone attack resulted in the killing of a US contractor and the wounding of five US service members.
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Command condemned on Friday the recent drone attack on a joint base with the US-led Global Coalition in northeast Syria.
About 900 US troops are deployed in northeast Syria joining the US-led Global Coalition in the fight against Islamic State (ISIS) in partnership with the SDF.
