AANES receives aid convoy from KRI’s Sulaymaniyah

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Social Affairs and Labor Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) received on Tuesday an aid convoy, meant for earthquake-affected people, from residents of Sulaymaniyah in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

The board said, in a statement, that it received 25 trucks through al-Yaroubiya (Tel Kocher) border-crossing, adding that there are another four waiting the approval of the Iraqi government so they can pass.

The statement added that the convoy will head to disaster zones in northern Aleppo (Shahba region) and the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo city, noting that the social board of Shahba will handle the task of distributing the aid.

This is the first time aid enters through the crossing since January 2020 when it was closed by a Russian-Chinese veto in the UN Security Council.

The veto has obstructed the delivery of life-saving aid to dozens of IDP camps in North and East Syria. These camps combined house around 150.000 IDPs.

The AANES called on the international community and humanitarian organizations to push for the opening of the crossing permanently, so that aid can reach those in need.
