Earthquake death toll in Syria, Turkey surpasses 46.000
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The death toll of the earthquake that hit Syria and Turkey on Feb. 6 has risen to 46.000, according to official statements from both countries announced.
In Turkey, the death toll has risen to at least 40.642 people since Feb. 6, said Yunus Sezer, head of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing tens thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
In Syria, more than 4.400 people have died in the opposition-held areas of the country’s northwest, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said.
In turn, the Syrian government’s Ministry of Health has recorded at least 1.414 deaths.
