Earthquake damages dozens of schools in Qamishli
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Schools’ Administration of the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishli, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), said on Thursday that around 50 schools were damaged in the earthquake that hit the region.
On February 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Syria and Turkey, killing more than 41.000 and injuring many more, in addition to destroying thousands of buildings.
Mazloum Hassam, an official at the Schools’ Administration of Qamishli, told North Press that in addition to residential buildings, the earthquake resulted in great damage to public institutions and schools in the city of Qamishli.
Hassam said that they were forced to close schools and form a committee of specialized engineers to inspect the incurred damage due to the quake.
He added that they did maintenance operations for damaged schools, which enabled students to come back to their schools after days of suspension.
“The incurred damages do not pose a threat to students. However, the engineers expressed their concerns regarding some schools that sustained big cracks,” he said.
