UNHCR, NGOs install tents in Kobani for earthquake-displaced people
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – GOPA-DERD, a religious charity organization, in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), will install ten tents to shelter people affected by the earthquake in Kobani.
The Qamishli-based NGO visited Kobani’s Labor and Social Affairs Board, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), on February 13 in order to launch and cooperate on the project.
The Co-chair of the board, Moro Hussein, said that the organization, in partnership with UNHCR, has helped install 10 tents in main squares and neighborhoods of Kobani.
Hussein told North Press that the tents would be ready to accommodate people affected by the earthquake on Wednesday. Seven tents have already been installed; work on the three others is ongoing.
Moro said that the board had installed 12 tents across the city where basic services and needs are being provided by the board every day.
Hussein added that the people visiting the tents were living in buildings which had been damaged during the earthquake or those fearful to return to their homes, especially multi-story buildings.
AVC, a Swiss NGO, is providing infant formula and diapers, Hussein noted.
