UN contributes $25 million to address urgent needs in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The UN contributed on Friday an additional $25 million as a grant to support aid efforts in the earthquake-stricken areas of Syria.
The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Martin Griffiths, said, in a statement, that the aim will “address some of the most urgent needs of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the earthquakes.”
An earthquake struck northwest Syria on Monday, as well as Turkey, as the country is experiencing deteriorating humanitarian conditions, a poverty-stricken population, a cholera outbreak, as well as harsh winter conditions, the statement reads.
The contribution followed an earlier grant by the UN of another $25 million to the Syrian areas affected by the earthquake.
