Daughter of Israeli spy appeals to bring father’s body back from Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A daughter of the Israeli spy Eli Cohen, who was executed in Syria, asked on Monday the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to help her to bring her father’s body back from Syria to Israel.
Sophie Ben-Dor, Cohen’s daughter, appealed to the UAE and its ambassador in Israel, Muhammad Mahmoud al-Khaja, to help her to bring the body of her father back to Israel.
Cohen, an Egyptian-born Israeli spy, was sentenced to death by a special military court in Damascus on May 8, 1965, after it was revealed that he was involved in an undercover work for Mossad, and he was hanged publicly in al-Marjeh Square in Damascus 10 days later.
Ben-Dor’s appeals came after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had visited the UAE in March 2022, as it was the first visit after the eruption of Syrian war in 2011.
Cohen’s family has previously requested Russia to assist with the body’s return, however, nothing happened.
In January 2022, Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrived in the UAE, seeking to strengthen Gulf ties.
It is the first visit of him since normalization between the two countries in 2020.
