Syrian Internal Security arrests two former regime officers
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Internal Security in Latakia governorate, in cooperation with the Counterterrorism Department, arrested two former regime officers on Monday over alleged involvement in violations and military operations during the Syrian uprising.
The Internal Security Administration said through its official channels that the detainees are Major General Haitham Suleiman Barakat, who served as commander of the 11th Infantry Division, and Brigadier General Marwan Suleiman Barakat.
It said Haitham is accused of participating in the suppression and detention of civilians, imposing extortion payments, financial blackmail, fabricating terrorism-related charges, and participating in the killing and disappearance of detainees and activists.
Marwan served as head of the artillery section of the 15th Infantry Brigade, part of the 5th Division, in Daraa Governorate between 2011 and 2019. He is accused of participating in military operations and shelling several cities and towns in the governorate, including Inkhel.
During that period, he also participated in shelling several areas in Daraa before later becoming commander of the 165th Artillery Regiment, affiliated with the First Corps.
