Turkish forces shell town in Syria’s Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press)Turkish forces targeted on Sunday the town of Tel Rifaat and nearby villages in Aleppo northern countryside, northwest Syria.

A military source told North Press that the Turkish forces and their affiliated armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), targeted the outskirts of the town of Tel Rifaat with 13 shells, and the village of Sheikh Issa with eight shells.

The town of Tel Rifaat, 35 km north of Aleppo city, has been a shelter for Afrin displaced people since 2018 following the Turkish invasion of Afrin and its countryside which resulted in the displacement of about 300.000 of the original inhabitants.

The Turkish forces and their affiliated SNA factions also shelled the village of Mayassa in Sherawa District in the countryside of Afrin, with several shells, the source added.

No reports have been provided regarding casualties or material damage, the source said.

For the last months, the villages in Aleppo northern countryside, also known as Shahba region, have been subjected to repeated shelling by the Turkish forces and affiliated SNA.

Shahba region houses IDPs of the Kurdish city of Afrin which was occupied in 2018 by Turkey following a military operation called “Olive Branch” to push away the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of protecting Turkey’s “national security”.
