Turkish aggression on Syria destabilizes region – Syria’s FM
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Any Turkish aggression on Syrian land and the establishment of a so-called safe zone destabilizes security and stability in the region, said Faisal Mekdad, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.
Mekdad reached Tehran, the capital city of Iran, on Tuesday, in parallel with Astana Summit in Iran.
During a press conference with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in Tehran, the Syrian minister said, “We oppose Turkey’s aggressive plans, Ankara’s policy of Turkification and support for terrorist groups, it is necessary to deprive Turkey of any pretext to invade the Syrian territory.”
Mekdad thanked Iran for the balanced statement on results of the summit, reaffirming the need to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria, he said “Syria is positive about the results of the trilateral summit in Tehran.”
In turn, Iranian Foreign Minister said during the conference that “We used the opportunity of the tripartite meeting to take a step forward in the issue of the withdrawal and cleansing of terrorist and armed groups from Syria and the return of security across the borders of Syria by maintaining the territorial integrity of this country.”
The Russian-Iranian-Turkish summit was held in Tehran within the framework of Astana Peace Talks, which will be held on July 20 and 21.
The Syrian crisis tops the agenda that will be discussed during the summit, amid expectations that Turkey will try to win a green light to launch its potential military operation on northern Syria.
