Mekdad’s visit to Tehran coincides with Russia-Iran-Turkey summit
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Faisal Mekdad, Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, reaches Tehran, the capital city of Iran, on Tuesday, in parallel with Astana Summit in Iran.
The semi-official al-Watan newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that Mekdad will meet with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian tomorrow morning, Wednesday, to discuss bilateral relations and the results of the Astana summit.
The newspaper quoted an Iranian source in Damascus as saying that “The Turkish escalation in northern Syria will be a priority in the issues that the Astana summit will discuss.”
“Mekdad’s visit has a direct bearing to what is being talked about or agreed upon during the tripartite summit between Russia, Iran and Turkey,” he added.
The source expressed his belief that “something positive will result from this summit, ending the crisis and escalation in northern Syria, ending any possibility of any Turkish military action, and giving guarantees or reassurances to the Turkish side by Iran and Russia, the two main allies of Syria in the current situation.”
Also, reassuring Ankara that there is no threat to Turkish national security from northern Syria, and this matter will be in agreement with the Kurds, according to the newspaper.
