Future Syria Party elects new president

RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Future Syria Party elected on Friday Abd Hamed al-Mehbash, co-chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) as the party’s president succeeding its founder Ibrahim al-Qaftan.

On Friday, the Future Syria Party held its general conference in the city of Raqqa, north Syria, with the attendance of representatives from the AANES and members of political parties. 

The Future Syria Party was founded on March 27, 2018. Ibrahim al-Qaftan was elected as the president of the party and Hevrin Khalaf was elected as secretary-general.

In 2019, Hevrin Khalaf was assassinated on M4 highway between Raqqa and Hasakah by Ahrar al-Sharqiya, a Turkish-backed armed faction.     

Members of the party and the representatives of the institutions attended the conference voted for al-Mehbash to succeed al-Qaftan in leading the party.

Al-Mehbash took over co-chair of the AANES Executive Council in October 2018.

He was born in the eastern countryside of Raqqa in 1973, and graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Aleppo in 1996.
