Civilian killed, others wounded by Turkish border guards in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, a civilian was killed and others were wounded when the Turkish border guards (gendarmerie) fired at them while they were trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border north of Idlib, northwest Syria.
The gendarmerie directly fired at civilians, including women and children, while they were trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border north of Idlib, local sources told North Press.
The direct firing killed Abdullah Abdulmajeed al-Maqboud, from Umm Sahrij in the countryside of Ma’arat al-Nu’man, south of Idlib, and wounded the other four, the sources added.
The group was trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border to work in Turkey due to the poor living and economic conditions in northwest Syria, according to the sources.
There are frequent cases of targeting civilians trying to cross the Syrian-Turkish border in northwestern Syria.
On Sunday, a displaced child from the northern countryside of Hama was shot dead by the gendarmerie in al-Ali camp, which is within Atma camp, on the Syrian-Turkish border, north of Idlib.
In 2018, Human Rights Watch published a report entitled “Turkish border guards kill and injure asylum seekers,” and said that closing the borders endangers the lives of Syrians.
Human Rights Watch accused the Turkish gendarmerie of shooting and beating Syrians when they tried to enter Turkey, which caused the death and serious injury of a number of them, and called on the Turkish authorities to stop repelling Syrian asylum seekers and investigate the use of excessive force by the guards.
