Dozens killed in Kabul twin explosions, including Americans

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, two explosions, described as horrific, rocked Kabul airport, amid crowds of Afghans and foreign nationals trying to leave the country controlled by the Taliban, while sources in Washington said that among the victims were Americans.

The first explosion took place near the Abbey Gate area and the second near the Barun Hotel at the airport of the Afghan capital.

Pentagon press secretary John Kirby tweeted that he can confirm that “a number” of US service members have been killed in the airport attack, while the Wall Street Journal said that four US soldiers killed and three others wounded.

For its part, the American NPR organization published that “the attack is definitely believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State group, as a US official told the Associated Press.”

A spokesman of the Taliban condemned the twin explosions saying that the area was under the control of the US military.

“The Islamic Emirate strongly condemns the bombing targeting civilians at Kabul airport,” Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted.

UN Secretary General, António Guterres has condemned the “terrorist attack which killed and injured a number of civilians” in Kabul”, his spokesman said.

“This incident underscores the volatility of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan, but also strengthens our resolve as we continue to deliver urgent assistance across the country in support of the Afghan people,” spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.
