7 coronavirus deaths recorded in Syria’s northeast

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the Health Board of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) announced the recording of 37 new coronavirus infections and 7 deaths in northeast Syria.

AANES’ Facebook page quoted Jiwan Mustafa, co-chair of the AANES Health Board, who stated that the deaths were two men from Hasakah, three men from Qamishli, and a man and a woman from Tabqa.

The majority of infections were concentrated in Derik which recorded 15, and Qamishli 14.

Other infections were in: Derbasiya five, one in each Hasakah, Manbij and Shahba in the northern countryside of Aleppo, where Afrin IDPs reside.

Meanwhile, the AANES Health Board recorded 14 new recoveries.

With the announcement of these new cases, the number of people infected with coronavirus in the regions of northeast Syria has reached 15,833 confirmed cases, including 578 deaths and 1,620 recoveries.

On Thursday, the AANES extended the partial lockdown in its areas for a week starting from April 30 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

However, the new decision included the closure of all border crossings with the AANES, with the exception of humanitarian cases, and the prevention of wedding gatherings, mourning tents, meetings, and prayers in places of worship and all kinds of gatherings throughout the partial lockdown period.

The decision was followed by another one that stipulated the end of the academic year next Monday, with the exception of preparatory and high school students who will be included in preventative measures.

In previous statements, officials in the AANES’s Health Board reiterated that the decisions of local lockdown in specific areas or total in all areas of the AANES are determined according to the data of the outbreak of the pandemic.
