Syrian government fights large swarms of locusts attacking crops
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Areas that were protected from desert locusts have reached more than 21.6 thousand acres so far, Iyad Muhammad, Director of Plant Protection at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Syrian government, said on Thursday.
Swarms of locusts are attacking the Syrian territory, but the Syrian Minister of Agriculture stated that the locusts that entered the country have not badly affected the crops.
The official ministry Facebook posted that this area is distributed among various governorates, including 2,850 acres in Damascus and Rif Dimashq, 4,700 acres in Daraa, 1,400 acres in Aleppo, and 1,400 in Quneitra … etc.
“There are swarms in Debsi Afnan area in Raqqa that are being dealt with, and others in the west of Suwayda, with low densities,” it added.
The Ministry of Agriculture has set emergency phone numbers for all governorates in order to directly communicate with it in case the swarms of locusts arrive in any area, to be dealt with by the Prevention Departments in the governorates.
