The area needs security operations, Deir ez-Zor Civil Council

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Ghassan al-Youssef, the co-chair of the Deir ez-Zor Civil Council, said on Wednesday, that the sleeper cells of ISIS in Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria, are operating quickly.

He indicated that the region needs frequent military combing operations to provide stability and safety.

Al-Youssef told North Press that after the elimination of ISIS in March 2019, the activity of its sleeper cells increased, especially in 2020, as they carry out terrorist operations on a daily basis.

He added that there are other external entities rather than ISIS members that carry out such operations, without naming them.

ISIS sleeper cells target members of the local councils, municipalities, and other employees of the Democratic Civil Administration in Deir ez-Zor, according to al-Youssef.

He indicated that this affects greatly and negatively the work of the Civil Administration in Deir ez-Zor.

Al-Youssef pointed out that there is an urgent need for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Global Coalition to carry out frequent operations in order to provide security and stability in Deir ez-Zor.

“There is concern among the residents of Deir ez-Zor, about the increase in these operations without providing protection for the people of the region,” he noted.

He said that the risk of terrorist organizations returning and spreading again is a very high possibility that they are present in Deir ez-Zor and their military operations are present continuously.

The Deir ez-Zor Civil Council holds periodic meetings with the Global Coalition forces related to military, security and economic affairs, amid demands to provide security and stability.

The eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor is witnessing an increase in the activity of ISIS sleeper cells, including assassinations and planting IEDs.

On November 22, a civilian from Sheheil, lost his life as a result of unidentified gunfire.
