Dozens killed and injured in explosion in Azaz, northwestern Syria
AZAZ, Syria (North Press) – The death toll due to the bombing of the village of Sijjo, north of the Syrian city of Azaz, rose to five. Around 70 people were injured amid expectations that the number will rise due to the critical cases among the injured.
A North Press correspondent stated that the explosion was caused by a car bomb which was loaded with firewood for camouflage coming from the Afrin region.
He added that the explosion took place in the roundabout of the village of Sijjo, near Bab al-Salama crossing, where there is a military police station belonging to the Syrian opposition and a police station at the crossing, pointing out that the majority of the victims are civilians.
He pointed out that the injured were taken to Azaz National Hospital and Blue Crescent Hospital in Bab al-Salama, where the latter announced the need for blood donors.
Lists of injured people that were circulated by activists, showed that the majority of the injuries were caused by shrapnel and included separate parts of the body.
No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but many blamed the Syrian government.
Afrin, from which the car bomb came, is under the control of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) groups.
Opposition groups’-controlled areas witness a state of security chaos which includes explosions of booby traps and repeated clashes between the groups, which often lead to civilian casualties.
