Mine explosion in Raqqa, Syria leaves two dead

RAQQA ,Syria (North Press) – A mine exploded in the village of Jaeidin, southwest of Raqqa city in Saturday night, killing two.

The explosion resulted in the death of two young shepherds between the ages of fifteen and sixteen who reportedly came from the same family.

Mine engineering experts rushed to the site and located the remnants of explosive devices, including wires and batteries, which were dismantled and deactivated.

A worker from the mine engineering teams told North Press that there are some areas that are still unsafe, and that people must use caution when moving in remote areas due to the possibility of unexploded ordinance.

Remnants of explosive devices from the battles to liberate Raqqa from the Islamic State in 2017 still pose a hazard to residents of the city. According to the WHO, at least 130 people were killed by explosive devices in Raqqa city alone from 20 October 2017 to 23 February 2018.
