Eight prisoners killed, 17 wounded in Kobani prison tensions
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Eight prisoners were killed and 17 others wounded, some critically, early on Saturday following security tensions inside Kobani prison in northern Syria, after protests over the killing of an SDF-linked fighter turned violent.
According to information obtained by North Press, the tensions followed a public protest in Kobani calling for an investigation into the abduction and killing of Sami Sheikh Moussa Hasso, known as Sipan Karmi (Hizni), a fighter who had been integrated into the security structures under the ongoing SDF-Damascus integration process.
The protest was accompanied by security tensions, including stone-throwing and gunfire to disperse demonstrators, before security reinforcements arrived in Kobani from the areas of Sirrin and Manbij. Arrests subsequently took place in the city.
Later, tensions escalated inside Kobani prison after prisoners rejected threats to transfer them to prisons in Aleppo. This led to unrest inside the facility and fires breaking out in several prison wards, resulting in eight prisoners being killed and 17 others wounded, including some in critical condition, according to preliminary information.
Kobani is currently experiencing a tense calm, with security forces continuing to deploy across several parts of the city.
