Syria’s Internal Security arrests former senior government officer
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syria’s Internal Security Forces in Tartous governorate said on Monday they arrested former Brig. Gen. Mohammad Ali Dirgham, a senior officer under the former government.
The forces said Dirgham was arrested following surveillance and monitoring operations.
According to military records cited by the forces, Dirgham held several sensitive positions, including commanding a unit in the Defense Companies during the 1982 events in Hama governorate.
He later served as field commander of the 4th Division from 2009 to 2013, deputy commander of the 5th Division and commander of the 2nd Corps until late 2018, the forces said.
Preliminary investigations and documentation records showed that Dirgham allegedly issued direct orders to his units to open fire on protesters in Damascus countryside and oversaw raids that resulted in widespread arbitrary arrests, the forces said.
The investigation remains ongoing to document the alleged incidents and prepare Dirgham’s referral to the competent court for legal action, according to the forces.
