QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian officials and several foreign countries extended on Saturday their condolences following a deadly traffic accident on the Deir ez-Zor–Damascus road that left dozens of people dead and injured.
The death toll from the collision between two buses on the road between al-Sukhnah and Palmyra in Homs governorate has risen to 35, while 30 others were injured, according to the Homs Health Directorate.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa wrote on X: “May God have mercy on the victims of the traffic accident on the Deir ez-Zor–Damascus road, including members of the Internal Security Forces and civilians. We ask God to grant their families patience and comfort, and a speedy recovery to the injured.”
Hasakah Governor Nour al-Din Ahmed said: “With hearts filled with grief, I extend my sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of the victims of the tragic traffic accident that claimed the lives of a number of civilians on the Damascus–Deir ez-Zor road.”
Speaker of the People’s Assembly Abdulhamid al-Awak also offered condolences, saying: “On behalf of myself and the People’s Assembly, I extend my heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the families of the civilian victims and members of the Internal Security Forces who lost their lives in this tragic accident.”
SDF Commander General Mazloum Abdi said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic traffic accident on the Deir ez-Zor road that claimed the lives of dozens of our fellow Syrians.”
He added: “We extend our sincere condolences to the victims’ families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”
Transport Minister Yarub Badr said: “The Ministry of Transport extends its deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the families of the victims of the tragic accident on the Palmyra–Deir ez-Zor road and prays for God’s mercy upon those who lost their lives and a swift recovery for the injured.”
He added that the incident “represents a painful national tragedy,” stressing that the ministry would continue efforts to improve infrastructure, enhance road safety, support the humanitarian response, and cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
Education Minister Muhammad Abdulrahman Turko also expressed condolences, saying: “With hearts that believe in God’s will and destiny, we extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic traffic accident on the Palmyra–Deir ez-Zor road.”
Several countries also issued official statements of condolence.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry expressed its sincere condolences to the Syrian government and people over the victims of the crash.
Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates extended its deepest sympathies to the Syrian government and people, while Qatar’s Embassy in Damascus offered condolences to the Syrian Arab Republic over the victims of the accident.
Turkish Ambassador to Syria Burhan Koroglu said: “I pray that God grants the victims’ families patience and comfort and bestows His mercy upon those who lost their lives.”
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said: “We extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and to the Syrian government following this tragic traffic accident.”
France’s Embassy in Damascus said in a statement on X: “We extend our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the Syrian government, the Syrian people, and the families of the victims of the tragic traffic accident on the Deir ez-Zor–Damascus road,” wishing a full and speedy recovery to all those injured.
