Gunmen attack government forces in Deir ez-Zor attacks, 2 personnel injured
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two members of Syrian government forces were wounded on Saturday in separate attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
A source from the security forces said the first attack targeted Hammoud al-Saleh, a member of the Internal Security forces, near his house in the village of Sabha in Deir ez-Zor eastern countryside.
The source added that unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle opened fire at al-Saleh using a pistol, wounding him with two gunshots.
Al-Saleh was later transferred to Damascus to receive treatment, the source noted, adding that the attackers fled the scene while chanting slogans associated with the Islamic State (ISIS).
In a separate incident, another member of the Syrian Ministry of Defense was wounded after being targeted by unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle near the al-Sheifiya neighborhood in the town of al-Kishkiyah, east of Deir ez-Zor.
The source indicated that the soldier was off duty at the time of the attack and was in the area on leave.
Security incidents involving motorcycle-borne gunmen have repeatedly been reported in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, where sleeper cells suspected of links to the Islamic State continue to carry out sporadic attacks against security and military personnel.
