Unknown drone strikes convoy of Iranian Kurdish party
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A drone strike targeted on Wednesday a convoy belonging to an Iranian Kurdish opposition party in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, killing at least one person, according to party officials and human rights sources.
Omar Ilkhani-Zadeh, Deputy Secretary-General of Komala Party of Iranian Kurdistan, said an unmanned aerial vehicle struck his convoy on Wednesday.
Speaking to the Kurdish service of Voice of America, Ilkhani-Zadeh said, “Yesterday, Wednesday, while we were traveling on the road from Dukan to Sulaymaniyah, we were targeted by a drone.”
“As a result of the strike, one of my guards lost his life,” he added.
Kamaran Osman, head of the Human Rights Department at the U.S.-based CPT organization, said that the attack on the convoy resulted in the death of Ilkhani-Zadeh’s personal guard and another individual who was with him.
Osman accused Iran of being behind the drone strike targeting the Komala deputy secretary’s convoy.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions. On Wednesday, the U.S. news website Axios reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing for a “major war” against Iran, with the participation of Israel.
The outlet cited sources as saying the attack could begin “very soon.”
