SDF thwarts attack on ISIS prison in Hasakah
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – A leader of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Tuesday that clashes erupted around al-Sinaa prison in the city of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, after sleeper cells of the Islamic State (ISIS) attempted to attack the facility in a bid to free foreign detainees held inside.
The official told North Press that the prison houses around 5,000 foreign ISIS members, originating from European countries, Egypt, and several African states, among others.
He noted that SDF forces were able to contain the attack and prevent the cells from approaching the prison.
According to the official, the SDF deployed significant military reinforcements to the area surrounding the prison, including armored vehicles and fighters from multiple units, while also intensifying security patrols as part of measures aimed at tightening control and preventing any security breach.
Armored vehicles belonging to the Counter-Terrorism Units, which include Kurdish fighters, were seen heading toward the prison to bolster security measures.
The official added that al-Sinaa Prison is operated by the SDF with support from the U.S.-led Global Coalition, confirming that no U.S. aircraft were observed flying over the area during the clashes.
