Syrian security forces detain former Major General in Latakia
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian internal security forces announced on Monday the arrest of Naif Saleh Dirgham, a former major general and ex-military prosecutor, in Latakia. The detention follows what authorities described as “careful monitoring and continuous surveillance,” according to a statement released by the Syrian Ministry of Interior on its official Telegram channel.
Dirgham, originally from the village of al-Shamiya in northern Latakia countryside, is accused of committing “serious violations against civilians” during his tenure in high-ranking security and judicial positions, the ministry statement added.
Brigadier General Abdulaziz al-Ahmad, head of Latakia’s internal security, told North Press that Dirgham was “among the individuals who held sensitive positions within state institutions,” overseeing military and field courts handling state security cases during the period of his service.
The arrest reflects the ongoing efforts of Syrian internal security forces to investigate alleged past abuses within military and judicial institutions. Authorities have emphasized that operations targeting former officials are part of a broader process of accountability, in line with current domestic legal frameworks.
