Fire breaks out at school in Syria’s Hasakah causing material damage
Hasakah, Syria (North Press) – A fire broke out on Saturday evening at a school in the northwestern countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, which houses displaced families from the city of Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain.
The fire, broke out at al-Salam al-Fayyad Primary School in the town of Tweinah, located in northwestern Hasakah countryside, resulted in significant material damage, but no injuries were reported.
A displaced resident currently staying in the school told North Press that the fire was caused by an explosion of a kerosene stove inside the building, which shelters approximately 21 displaced families.
He added that the residents, with the assistance of firefighting teams, managed to control the flames before they spread to other rooms.
The fire destroyed some furniture and food supplies belonging to the IDP families, causing panic among the residents, particularly women and children, who have been enduring difficult living conditions for years.
Since the Turkish military operation Peace Spring in October 2019, which, along with allied armed opposition groups, displaced tens of thousands of people from the region, tens of thousands of Kurdish families from Sere Kaniye continue to live in schools and temporary shelters in the Hasakah countryside.
The displaced residents face severe humanitarian conditions, including overcrowded facilities and a lack of essential services, compounded by risks similar to the fire that occurred on Saturday, as many families rely on rudimentary cooking and heating methods.
Despite ongoing international efforts, displaced families continue to struggle with inadequate support and infrastructure, leaving them vulnerable to both immediate dangers like fires and long-term hardships.
