Underground prison discovered in Homs, used under Assad regime
HOMS, Syria (North Press) – The Internal Security Forces (ISF) in Homs announced on Wednesday the discovery of an underground prison in an agricultural area near the village of Abu Hakfa in the northeastern countryside of the governorate. According to officials, the site had been used during the former government era to detain civilians.
Marwan al-Sultan, a security official in eastern Homs countryside, told the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the location resembled “an underground cave unfit for living, exploited for the abduction of women, men, and children to achieve financial and political gains.”
He added that security forces are continuing to comb the area amid expectations of uncovering additional mass graves. He stressed that all individuals involved in these crimes will be held accountable under the law.
The discovery sheds light on long-standing allegations of clandestine detention facilities operated under the former government and affiliated militias, where civilians were subjected to enforced disappearances and extortion.
Operations to secure and investigate the site remain ongoing, with local authorities emphasizing their commitment to uncovering the full extent of the violations and bringing perpetrators to justice.
