Syrian authorities detain ex-regime member over war crimes
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that Internal Security Forces in Latakia arrested a man accused of committing multiple war crimes during the era of the former regime. His location was revealed by local civilians, according to the ministry.
The ministry said in a statement that investigations confirmed Hussein Shakir‘s involvement in several battles against opposition areas and in mutilating bodies of the deceased while serving in militias affiliated with the former regime.
It added that after the fall of the regime, Shakir was also found to have formed a drug trafficking ring and engaged in theft of public property.
The ministry noted that Shakr has been referred to the Counter-Terrorism Directorate to complete investigations before being presented to the judiciary.
In recent months, Syrian authorities have reported the arrest of several former regime affiliates accused of committing crimes against Syrians during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, highlighting an ongoing effort to pursue accountability and marking a significant step toward transitional justice in Syria.
