Canada eases sanctions on Syria, appoints envoy for Damascus

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Canada announced on Wednesday that it will ease financial sanctions on Syria and appoint an envoy for Damascus, marking a shift in its approach to the country.

Omar Alghabra, Canada’s new Special Envoy for Syria, stated that Canada can play a crucial role in supporting Syrians in building an inclusive state that respects all its citizens.

He also emphasized Canada’s commitment to preventing Syria from descending into further chaos and instability.

In a statement, Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring the delivery of critical humanitarian aid to those in need across Syria.

As part of this effort, Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, announced a new funding package of $84 million for humanitarian assistance in response to the ongoing crisis.

Additionally, the ministry outlined plans to ease sanctions that were previously imposed on the Syrian regime.

This adjustment will allow financial transactions through specific banks in Syria, including the Central Bank of Syria, to facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid.
